The Patron Saint of children, merchants, pawn brokers, prisoners, sailors and others. His statue now stands in the Nave. The statue was created by Madge Bonham Carter and was dedicated on 11th May, 1958. St Nicholas is depicted as the saviour of two children whom he is said variously to have rescued.
Nicholas was a Bishop of Myra in the 4th Century. His shield depicts 3 bags of gold - the basis of the pawnbroker’s sign. The gold was said to have been given by him to three girls as a dowry to save them from prostitution.
Today he is probably best known by a distortion of his name - Santa Claus. His feast is celebrated on 6th December and in this village it is marked by a Village Fair and a celebration in church.
The Church that we enjoy today is listed as Grade 1. The oldest part of this building is of the nave which may be 13th Century. Its two windows with three ogee headed lights were inserted about 1520.
of the Nave was rebuilt in 1733 and the staircase to the Rood Loft was probably removed at that time. The stair entrance now forms the niche for the statue of St Nicholas. The Luard window in the north wall of the Nave is by Morris & Co.
